Did You Know?

Did you know that drinking green tea comes with some precautions?

According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, here are the precautions they have listed….

Precautions:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. However, herbs contain active substances that can trigger side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, people should take herbs with care, under the supervision of a practitioner knowledgeable in the field of botanical medicine.

People with heart problems, kidney disorders, stomach ulcers, and psychological disorders (particularly anxiety) should not take green tea. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid green tea.

People who drink excessive amounts of caffeine (including caffeine from green tea) for prolonged periods of time may experience irritability, insomnia, heart palpitations, and dizziness. Caffeine overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and loss of appetite. If you are drinking a lot of tea and start to vomit or have abdominal spasms, you may have caffeine poisoning. If your symptoms are severe, lower your caffeine intake and see your health care provider.

One good thing about GreenTeaHP is that each serving is equivalent to 1/4 cup of coffee which depending on what kind of coffee you drink is under 100 milligrams of caffeine.

What a Ride!

Well, as you can see GreenTeaPros has been offline for a few months….not that we wanted to ignore our Blog or Readers, but out of necessity.

About one year ago, my brother who at the time was 32 yrs old and looked to be in perfect health was told he was in kidney failure and that he needed a kidney transplant.  The doctors were unsure of the timeframe, however due to the news, my brother was determined to prolong the diagnosis and avoid dialysis.  He was successful!  He made a drastic change in his diet, basically no protein and was able to prolong the life of his kidneys.

In September of this year, he was told that he had to receive the transplant within 2 weeks or be forced to have dialysis so that he would not die….I know scary stuff!!  Well, I was the donor, so with 2 weeks, we had plane tickets from CA to FL, a rental house, plane tickets for our parents from PA to FL, and wrapped up loose ends at home including having someone take are of our son, house and dogs.  That was a stressful 2 weeks to say the least, but everything lined up perfectly…Thank GOD!!!

The kidney transplant surgery was October 20th…it was a great success!!  I was released after 4 days and my brother was released after 5 days.  We recuperated in our rental home which accommodated our whole family, which was awesome, we all had our own bedrooms and plenty of space including daily walks on the 2 acres it sat own, and that helped recovery.  After 3 weeks we all went home to respective homes.  As of today, we are still healing, but God is good and we are doing very well.

With all the being said…the GreenTeaPros Blog continues!!!!!

Caffeine in an Energy Drink Can Equal 15 Cokes!!

By: Linda Doell Aug 20th 2010

While names like AMP Energy, Pepsi Max, Red Bull and Rockstar can sound exciting, that hyped-up feeling isn’t from just the name — one energy drink can pack as much caffeine as downing 15 cans of Coca-Cola, researchers say.

Researchers looked at energy drink ingredients, including caffeine, guarana, ginseng, taurine and sugars, and concluded that better performance can be attributed to the energy drinks’ caffeine content. Two studies looked at energy drinks and their use by teenagers and athletes and have been published in the medical journal The Physician and Sportsmedicine.

With 100 brands of energy drinks being marketed for their abilities to increase alertness and improve performance, it’s no wonder energy drink sales have increased 240% between 2004 and 2009, the researchers say.

Researchers from Michigan State University point out that most energy drinks have between 80 to 500 milligrams of caffeine per bottle or can — almost 15 times the 34 mg found in a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola. That study, in the current issue of the medical journal, did acknowledge that there are now some energy drinks that are caffeine free.

“Caffeine is generally considered safe” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Michigan report says. “Caffeine toxicity is dose dependent and fatalities have been reported at very high dosages” based on body weight, with thinner people having more concentrated amounts of caffeine in their bodies. The risk of serious side effects increases with people who have heart disease or who smoke.

The FDA says that caffeine is mildly addictive and that could be the reason drink makers include it in sodas and other beverages. The agency points out in a report that only 5% of colas made by Coca-Cola are caffeine free, although beverage makers claim caffeine boosts taste.

While not addressing the ingredient of caffeine, energy drink Red Bull’s website points out that its products are designed to boost energy, not replenish the body after exertion, and recommends consumers drink plenty of water during exercise.

Another study by researchers at Nova Southeastern University also found that some data suggests combining energy drinks with exercise cuts body fat , but other data contradicted that conclusion. That report, published in April, recommends education on how caffeine affects on the body.

Are there Secrets to a Flat Belly?

The secret to a flat belly: Headlines abound claiming that specific foods, nutrients, supplements and exercises somehow selectively melt away the beer bellies and “muffin tops” that spill over our pants.

Waistline fat includes the pinchable fat deposited just under the skin and “visceral fat” that nestles deep around abdominal organs and seems most strongly related to risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Many fat-fighting claims lack research support, but some offer reasonable strategies.

Get your grains

Some studies show that people who eat more whole grains are more likely to have a healthy weight and waistline than those with diets high in refined grains. Studies also link eating patterns that include more refined grains (like white bread) with greater yearly increases in weight and waist.

Replacing refined grains and sweets with whole grains could lead to smaller surges in blood sugar and reduced insulin levels. In theory, lower insulin levels could shift metabolic processes to favor fat burning instead of fat storage, but there isn’t research to support the claim.

Whole grains clearly bring health benefits, but simply switching the type of carbohydrate without decreasing calorie consumption may not lead to the loss of belly fat headlines suggest. However, along with reduced calorie consumption, favoring whole grains over refined grains may support a flatter belly.

Obese men and women who cut about 500 calories per day lost an average of 10 pounds in a 12-week Penn State study. Those who ate exclusively whole grains lost more than twice the abdominal fat of those assigned to eat only refined grains.

Start sweating

With no change in diet, a Duke University study of overweight adults illustrates the power of exercise. Non-exercisers increased visceral fat by 9 percent in six months. Those who walked about three hours or jogged two hours a week held abdominal fat levels steady. Jogging about three hours a week decreased both visceral and surface abdominal fat.

In this study, participants lost abdominal fat regardless of exercise intensity, so an hour’s walk six days a week might also produce this fat loss, though that was not tested here.

In another study participants reduced their daily calories by 400 and did either 30 minutes of vigorous or 60 minutes of moderate activity three times weekly. After five months, people averaged a 26-pound weight loss, including a 25 to 27 percent drop in visceral fat; use of moderate versus vigorous exercise didn’t affect results.

Studies also support belly-flattening benefits from strength training (such as resistance training with weights or elastic bands). In one study, overweight post-menopausal women decreased their waist size by an average of one inch after four months of resistance training.

Other research shows that resistance training can decrease both deep and surface abdominal fat. Spot exercises like sit-ups and crunches are important to tighten abdominal muscles, but they can’t selectively burn up abdominal fat.

Supplements are sketchy

Are there extra tricks to help banish belly fat? For most supplements, research is either too limited, shows no affect or actually identifies dangers. Yet catechin phytochemicals (such as EGCG) in green tea may increase fat burning and decrease abdominal fat, at least when added to decreased calorie consumption or increased activity.

Studies adding daily EGCG, found in 4 to 12 ounces of brewed green tea, have shown drops of about three-quarters to one inch in waist or about 7 percent in abdominal fat in three months, yet results are inconsistent. Products from drink mixes to vitamin supplements may indicate they contain green tea or EGCG yet have only a trace.

Conversely, consuming large amounts of tea can lead to unhealthy amounts of caffeine that may over-stimulate you or interact with medications. We need more research to clarify exactly how much belly-flattening power this strategy can have. Meanwhile, for most people, there’s no harm in adding a cup or two of green tea per day, especially if you use it to replace a high calorie, sugar-sweetened drink.

How Can I Speed Up My Metabolism?

By David L. Katz, MD Q.

Is there anything I can do besides exercise to speed up my metabolism? I have a hard time losing more than a pound a week even though I take regular spin classes and lift weights. Weight loss programs on TV show people losing 5 to 10 pounds a week. Just so you know, I’m in menopause and I’ve already lost 30 pounds over four months. — Judith Dwan, Libertyville, Illinois A.

I was the medical and nutrition expert on the first season of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club. Each week, I would suggest a very reasonable rate of weight loss, and each week the show’s producers would say, “More, faster!” The celebrities would then try extreme and unsustainable methods. They fasted, they used laxatives, they swallowed potentially hazardous supplements such as ephedra. And whatever weight they dropped, they tended to gain back.

A far more reliable source of information is the body of research indicating that slower weight loss is better. Study after study demonstrates that the 1-pound-a-week pace that you find frustrating is a sensible, safe rate. Frankly, you’re doing better than fine right now. Continue with the sensible eating and regular activity, and you’ll be able to sustain your loss.

But if you are adamant about boosting your metabolism, there are some options. Yes, exercise helps—the added muscle and increased lung capacity will help you feel more energetic; you’ll stay active and burn more calories throughout your day. Caffeine is a stimulant, and studies show it can boost metabolism a bit—although at the price of insomnia if you overdo it (up to four 8-ounce cups of coffee a day, roughly 340 milligrams of caffeine, is generally the upper limit). An antioxidant in green tea called EGCG may speed metabolism. Other contenders for reducing body fat include calcium and a group of fatty acids known as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), but their effects are modest at best.
